Today was the ol’ birthday. I originally had planned on early morning kayaking followed by Eeyore’s birthday, an staple Austin even that I have never experienced. But I had a massive allergy attack that put me out of commission until today. It still isn’t all gone, but I could at least function. We settled for milder activities.

First we went to the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum to see Hubble 3D, an IMAX film. It was immediately followed by a talk with some astronomers from the McDonald Observatory to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Hubble Launch.

Lookin’ good Homestar… ridiculous 3D glasses!

After a fantastic lunch at Tom’s Tabbouleh (we picked up some birthday baklava for later), we headed to the LBJ Presidential Library & Museum.

I adore this painting of Lady Bird.

On the way home (and in the complete opposite direction) we drove by the newly installed knit bombing on south Lamar.

Gotta love Austin!

My birthday always sneaks up on me and I never really think much of it. But after all the phone calls, texts, Facebook messages, cards in the mail, and getting super special (normally just special :) )treatment from Paul all day, I feel like a really lucky gal. Thank you, everyone, for all the happy birthday wishes! It couldn’t be anything but!

Oh and the flowers!! I mustn’t forget the flowers from Anne & Jim! :)

YUM!! The Bavarian Hefeweizen is really tasty. The Shiner will be ready in a few weeks.

Other updates… I went to North Texas and celebrated Father’s Day at a Ranger’s game with Paul, Dad and… um… Kellye. Kellye is my dad’s… um…. girl friend and we have never all hung out before. It wasn’t as awkward as I thought it was going to be. Dad seems happy. And she was… um… nice. :|

Also, I finished a little winter hat for Will… if he wants it. It was a really quick project and my first hat! I think it came out well.

And, YAY!, Mom’s Singer is finally here in Austown!! I took it to the Singer hospital and got a tune up. All is well.

Mom is coming to town this weekend and I am hoping we can squeeze in some fabric shopping. I would like to start making the sheer panels for the windows so we can hang them as soon as we move in. Wish me luck! I am hopelessly inexperienced…

I wanted a quick, summer-friendly knitting project. I started this last weekend and finished it this morning while watching The King and I. :P

You might recognize this yarn from my very FIRST knitting project… my scarf last year.

I also started a Sourdough Starter this morning but I won’t post pictures of that :) HAPPY SATURDAY!

Sunday of Brew and Crafts

Today we blew off the world and had fun together! We went to Strait Music for a new violin shoulder rest and a chord that will connect my keyboard to my computer… no, not that kind of keyboard… the musical kind! They were, of course, closed. So we came home and made beer with Paul’s handy dandy beer making kit!

In 5 weeks time, we will be the proud parents of 50 Bavarian Hefeweizen!

They have cheese making kits and wine kits too! I can’t wait to make some mozzarella!!

I was also able to finish up a knitting project that has been hanging over my head… I just didnt want to mess with french knots again!

This is going to replace the first attempt at a knit stuffed animal that I gave to Andy and Christina at one of their showers. My stitches are tighter which is better for baby.

I also started a knit head scarf which is a fun, quick, summer-friendly project. I will post a picture when it is finished.

AND I found a nifty website with Celtic knotwork drawing tutorials and tried my hand!

It was a fun and productive Sunday together!! :)

Bonus Christmas Knitting Project Test Run

I wanted to make something for Paul’s grandmother for Christmas but time is a-running out!! I found a very cool, somewhat easy (I had to learn a few new skills like knitting with double pointed needles, a new way to increase and decrease and knit2tog), and quick project. This was the trial run… I think this took an hour and a half. Hopefully I will get to make several our tree and for others! :) weeeeeee…..

My First Knitting Project… COMPLETE! :)

Knitting 2 Comments »

So I taught myself to knit (with some big tips along the way from co-workers and the internet) in June of this year. I just completed my first project… its a scarf, shawl, table runner type item with fringe… Haha! Honestly when I started it, I intended it to be a throw. Then I realized it was too narrow to be a throw so I thought it could be a scarf. Well, its just a little too thick to wear around your neck… especially in Texas where it might get cold enough to wear a scarf that thick a few days out of the year. But its done and that is what counts! And it looks pretty good too, if say so myself :)

Today I am wearing it as a shawl….

it’s an illusion michael… an illusion

Transporting Knitting Needles & Needlepoint
life… according to the TSA

Knitting needles are permitted in your carry-on baggage or checked baggage.  However, there is a possibility that the needles can be perceived as a possible weapon by one of our Security Officers {gee, ya think?}.  Our Security Officers have the authority to determine if an item could be used as a weapon and may not allow said item to pass through security.  We recommend the following when bring knitting needles on an airplane:

  • Circular knitting needles are recommended to be less than 31 inches in total length
  • We recommend that the needles be made of bamboo or plastic (Not Metal)
  • Scissors must have blunt points
  • In case a Security Officer does not allow your knitting tools through security it is recommended that you carry a self addressed envelope so that you can mail your tools back to yourself as opposed to surrendering them at the security check point.
  • As a precautionary measure we recommend that you carry a crochet hook with yarn to save the work you have already done in case your knitting tools are surrendered at the checkpoint

Most of the items needed to pursue a Needlepoint project are permitted in your carry-on baggage or checked baggage with the exception of circular thread cutters or any cutter with a blade contained inside.  These items cannot be taken through a security checkpoint. They must go in your checked baggage.
